Elizabeth Blackwell was born February 3, 1821 in England. She and her family came to the United States in 1832. Her mother had eight children to take care of, and with the passing of her father in 1838, Elizabeth was forced to help support the family. As time went on, Elizabeth became interested in medicine, but there were no female doctors at this time. Elizabeth believed that women would rather converse with a female about their medical issues. She applied and was rejected from 29 different medical schools and was finally accepted to Geneva Medical School in 1847.
She went on to graduate first in her class, and made a large impact on the medical world. Elizabeth and her sister, Emily developed the Woman's Medical College of New York. She also played a large role in the development of the United States Sanitary Commission. In 1875, Elizabeth became professor of gynecology at the London School of Medicine.
Elizabeth passed away, May 31, 1910, but all of her developments in medicine will live on.
